Wayne Rooney sends message to Manchester United transfer target Harry Kane

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has congratulated Harry Kane on becoming England's all-time record goalscorer.

England defeated Italy 2-1 in Naples in the opening game of their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign on Thursday night and Kane converted a penalty at the end of the second half to surpass Rooney's record as the nation's top scorer.

That strike was enough to ensure a victory and Kane's goal was his 54th goal for England, which means he's now scored more for the Three Lions than Rooney, Bobby Charlton, Gary Lineker, Jimmy Greaves and Michael Owen.

In his column with The Times, Rooney has reflected on Kane, who is wanted by Erik ten Hag in the summer, surpassing his England record and he's also predicted he will break Alan Shearer's Premier League record if he stays fit.

Rooney admitted he isn't bothered about his records and he tipped Marcus Rashford to take his top-score record at Old Trafford. "Where does he [Kane] stand among England strikers? He is probably the best. I think he is," Rooney said.

"How do I feel now I’m no longer the record holder? Absolutely fine. I’m not really bothered about records and think it is crazy that, before I broke it, the England scoring record stood for so long, given all the talented forwards England had.

"I knew this day would come and that Harry would be the one. People are different. I know Sir Bobby Charlton was actually a bit sad when I broke his England record and then his all-time Manchester United scoring record too. I could see it meant a lot to him.

"Then I think of [Cristiano] Ronaldo. He absolutely loves breaking records and wants to have every record there is. There’s nothing wrong with that. It gives him motivation. And maybe Harry is more like him than me.

"I just know that I feel great that Harry has done this and I’d love Marcus Rashford to take my United record off me. For me, records are great when you have them but are always there to be broken."
