Wayne Rooney's Jesse Lingard Manchester United verdict emphasises Newcastle transfer priority

Wayne Rooney believes recent Newcastle United target Jesse Lingard should still be playing for Manchester United. The England international has hardly featured for the Red Devils this term, with recent reports indicating the club have no intention of offering the attacker a contract extension beyond this summer.

Lingard was the subject of deadline-day drama, with the Magpies reviving their interest in their 29-year-old in the final hours of the January window. However, the two clubs were unable to reach an agreement and the attacking midfielder has made just a solitary start since.

Lingard was one of a host of first-team stars tipped to depart Old Trafford this summer, with Manchester United still searching for a permanent successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. It has been another disappointing campaign for the Red Devils, but Rooney believes there is a core of quality and promising young players at his former club.

He told Sky Sports: “I think as we said they’ve got good young players. I think Sancho will be better next year, Marcus will be better next year. They’ve got good young players. I think Jesse Lingard should be playing for them because he brings energy, brings quality. Scott McTominay’s done well.

"So they do have some good young players, you just have to get some confidence and get them believing that they’re good players and perform at the best level. And then obviously, whoever the new manager is, I’m sure he’ll bring his own players in and build that through."
