Wayne Rooney quit Derby County to 'devote more time to wife Coleen and their sons' as he unveils new look

Wayne Rooney's shock departure from Derby County came about so he can devote more time with his wife Coleen and their four sons it has been revealed. The club confirmed the former Manchester United player's departure in a statement yesterday evening.

Sources close to the football legend say he quit his £90,000-a-week job to be with his wife of 14 years and their boys Kai, 12, Klay, nine, Kit, six, and Cass, four, reports the Mirror. Wayne's first full summer break in 20 years comes following Coleen's 'Wagatha Christie' court battle with Rebekah Vardy the wife of Leicester City striker Jamie.

Coleen, 36, and her husband, also 36, are enjoying a holiday in Ibiza with pals including former United captain Michael Carrick, 40, and West Bromich Albion boss Steve Bruce’s son Alex. Their break comes after a family trip to Dubai with their sons in May.

A source told the Mirror: “Wayne’s always had pre-season tours, World Cups, Euros. He’s not had a summer off since he was a kid himself.

“He wants to spend the summer holidays with his boys. They break up from school soon and he just wants to spend a lot more time with them and Coleen.

“If he’d stayed at Derby then he’d have to be back at work in a week or so, preparing for the new season. That would have given him hardly any time with the children. He just wants to enjoy a full summer with his kids – it’ll be boss.”

Sharing snaps from their Ibiza trip Coleen said: "Magical memories, great friends, lots of belly laughs!! Very much needed." And over on his Instagram Wayne wrote: "More great memories made."

And after sporting long bushy beard Wayne opted for a new cleaner shaven look in Ibiza as he stepped out for the evening with his wife looking smart in a blue polo top and chinos. Coleen looked stunning as she showed off her bronze glow in a frilly detail skirt, black vest top, sandals and large hoop earrings.

The footballing superstar said after 18 months in charge the time is right for the Rams to be led with someone "with fresh energy." He said: “Over the course of the summer I have been closely following developments regarding the ownership of Derby County.

"Today I met with the administrators to inform them of my decision that it was time for me to leave the club. In fairness to them, they tried tremendously hard to change my decision but my mind was made up.

“My time at the club has been a rollercoaster of emotions, both highs and lows, but I have to say that I have enjoyed the challenge. Personally, I feel the club now needs to be led by someone with fresh energy and not affected by the events that have happened over the last eighteen months.

"I will remember my time at Derby with great pride and affection and would like to thank all my staff, players and of course the fans for their incredible support. I will never forget you and hope to see you all again in the near future and in happier times.

“Finally, I am aware that the club still have interested parties who wish to take over the running of the club. To them I say this, Derby County is a great club with a great history and great fans. I wish you all the best and much success for the future."
