Wayne Rooney gives Chelsea and Arsenal the green light to sign £49.5m World Cup winner

Wayne Rooney has given both Chelsea and Arsenal the green light to end Paul Pogba's Man United nightmare this summer as the current Derby manager believes it is the right time for the World Cup winner to move on from the Red Devils.

The Frenchman's contract expires in the summer and many of the European elite are vying for the free signature of United's number 6 come the end of the season. And judging by his scathing comments over the last international break, Pogba could be destined for the exit doors. "Here [with the French team], I have a lot more playing time, the system is different than in a club. In fact, it's simple, at the Blues, I play, and, in addition, at my post. I know my role, I feel the confidence of the coach, the players," he outlined during the March international period.

"It's normal to feel this difference with Man United, because it's hard to be consistent when you often change position, game system or partners." He then added on his displeasure regarding how United's season has unfolded: "This year, it [the season] is dead, we won't win anything yet. Whether it's with United or at another club, I want to win trophies."

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who had had to deal with a lot of player unrest since taking over mid-season from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, did not want to get too drawn in on these comments pre-Leicester and punished the soon-to-be outgoing midfielder with a spot on the bench for the visit of the foxes in the end. "I've got enough to do now to prepare the team for the next game," the German responded to the comments via the Manchester Evening News.

"Tomorrow's game is another important one and I don't think it makes sense to interpret or just judge what he has maybe said in an interview, it doesn't make sense, that's something you can do if you want. For me, it's only important to judge him. I heard he said he had played in different positions in the last couple of weeks. Yes, of course, since the game against West Ham on January 22, we have lost three strikers since then - Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and even with Edinson Cavani - who is injured again, unfortunately, and will be out for the next couple of weeks.

"And, on top of that, if Paul was still injured himself, then players like Bruno against Tottenham or Scott McTominay are missing, then, of course, somebody else has to play in a different tole. And if this is somebody like Paul, who is flexible and can play 6, 8, and even 10, then this is a normal thing." With things looking to end on a sour note, both London clubs who have a new midfielder signing on their agendas for this upcoming transfer window, could swoop in on a player who for the Blues sake could reinvigorate the fortunes of N'Golo Kante.

For the Gunners, a potential Pogba signing could compensate for the loss of someone like a Granit Xhaka or Mohamed Elneny with both touted to leave the club in past transfer windows to no avail so far. And if one of the two aforementioned clubs were to try and beat European giants to the signing of 29-year-old, then Rooney himself has given the pair the green light to swoop in for a player that the Evertonian born legend admitted needs to be 'let go.'

"It's got a point now where it's probably better for him to move on," he said on Sky Sports' coverage of the Monday Night Football between Crystal Palace and Arsenal. "I think if Paul is honest with himself, he hasn't had the impact he would have liked since he returned to Manchester United. I watch him play for France and he's a completely different player. Ability, his vision, control of the game is there every game for France. It just hasn't quite worked for him at Manchester United. There's a few players they need to let go."
