Wayne Rooney dreaming of Manchester United return as manager: 'That would be the pinnacle'

Wayne Rooney has said it would be a “dream” to manage Manchester United in the future.

The former England captain is back in management after being named the next head coach of Championship side Plymouth Argyle last week.

The role is Rooney’s first since he was sacked by Birmingham in January after a disastrous and short-lived reign that lasted less than three months and in which he lost nine of 15 games at the helm of a team that sat sixth when he arrived but were later relegated from the second tier.

Before that, the 38-year-old had spells in charge at Derby County and Major League Soccer (MLS) side DC United.

Rooney had a glittering playing career, finishing it as England and Manchester United’s all-time record goalscorer, and now he is dreaming of one day taking the reins at Old Trafford.

“It’s a tough one because I’ve always said that I’d love to manage Everton or Manchester United,” he said on The Overlap.

“I’d probably say United – that would be the pinnacle to manage Manchester United. Everton would be more from an emotional standpoint, a club I support and love, but United would be the pinnacle really.”

Rooney was working as a television pundit before taking over at Plymouth and it had been speculated that he would pursue a career in that field instead.

The former striker, however, has now revealed how he always wanted to get back into coaching.

“Obviously I want to get back into management,” said Rooney, who was speaking before getting the Plymouth job.

“It’s something I want to do and prove to myself. The last one, I was disappointed with myself with the results but also with how it ended.”
