Wayne Pivac Wales Q&A: There are plenty of positives but we need to fix silly discipline issues before France

Wales fell short against England at Twickenham, going down 23-19 in a Six Nations clash which went down to the wire.

Here's everything Wayne Pivac had to say afterwards:

Question: How do you assess that match?

Wayne Pivac: "It was two halves, wasn't it? The first half, we were disappointed with the discipline - we gave away eight penalties at the breakdown.

"You can't really get a foothold in the game, and going 17-0 down wasn't the way we wanted to start in the second half. It was a very good end to the game, but a very frustrating try that we conceded."

Where did it go wrong?

WP: "Clearly, the penalties we gave away meant we were chasing the game.

"If we had an opportunity to review that [England] try, it probably wouldn't have been given, so that was frustrating, but to the players' credit they got straight back on the horse and came back with two very good tries and we were right at the death, trying to win the match, so I am very pleased with the second half."

Was it pleasing that you showed some attacking promise?

WP: "You are always trying to build on the performance, and there is plenty to take out of that game that was pretty positive. In the second half, we built phases, got the ball in hand a lot more, we started to win some collisions and we looked dangerous."

Is that your tournament hopes over and done with?

WP: "Obviously disappointed to be two down after three rounds.

"We have two home games left and, from our point of view, they’re very important. We’d like to finish strongly, especially at home. What better place than to try and pick up a result against France who are playing so well at the moment."

How did you feel Alex Cuthbert went on his 50th cap?

WP: "I thought Alex on his 50th game was immense. He was a guy coming off his wing, taking the ball down the right flank and then a couple of phases taking it down the left flank in the 80th minute.

"He was superb, he enjoyed the opportunity and played well.

"A lot of the bench came on and all of them added impact. It’s just frustrating we didn’t get a result for those players."

What are your Wales player ratings?

How difficult is it to fix those discipline issues when France will be looking to expose them?

WP: "Some of them were silly penalties, not rolling away, getting trapped on the wrong side of the tackle.

"A couple of times we got isolated after line breaks. Those things happen. It’s an area of the game we’re working hard on. It’s something we need to get right for France because they’re dangerous."

What is there left to play for?

WP: "Well there are two Test matches at home. Hopefully a sell-out crowd. Plenty to play for."

Was Adam Beard pushed out of lineout?

WP: “Yes. He was.

"He was chased out of the lineout and bumped, which you can’t do. Unfortunately, that wasn’t picked up and the try stands."

Is that a frustrating one to take, given how important the try was?

WP: “It’s not very often you throw over the top close to your line. It’s unfortunate that no one picked it up. From the replay we’ve seen, there was certainly an offence."

What was the situation with Owen Watkin and Tomas Francis' HIAs?

WP: “They go through some testing behind the scenes. They both passed the testing so they’re allowed to play on. They’ll go through more testing after and if they clear that, they’ll be allowed to train.”

You've got France up next, what sort of step up are you expecting from that?

WP: "We’ve had two fantastic matches over the last couple of Six Nations. They’re a good side, they’re improving all the time.

"I heard they played very well, it’s going to be a great game if the last two are anything to go by.”
