Waterloo Road has angered viewers by killing off much loved character Chlo Charles after just one episode of the new series.
Chlo is one of the show originals from its mid 00s hey-day that returned as the high school drama made its return to screens, 17 years after its successful debut. Played by actress Katie Griffiths, Chlo was at the centre of some massive storylines in the first few series of Waterloo Road, including her romance with eventual husband Dante, leading to a tense drink drive storyline, teenage pregnancy and a cheating scandal, which saw her sleep with her sister's boyfriend.
Chlo was also rocked by the harrowing death of mum Izzy, played by Jill Halfpenny, which gave the BBC programme one of its most heart-wrenching moments. Waterloo Road's return to screens was announced in 2021 and, shortly before filming commenced last year, it was confirmed that Katie would be back in the Waterloo Road cast as Chlo, along with on-screen husband Adam Thomas, much to the excitement of fans.
Viewers couldn't wait to see young parents Chlo and Dante back together, but their reunion proved to be very short lived as Chlo died after just one episode. An unexpected moment in episode one saw her hit by a car, an accident she managed to walk away from. However, while it was an injury to her wrist that caused concern, the collision had more serious repercussions and, just as she and Dante were sharing a tender moment over her plans to become a teaching assistant, Chlo told him 'something was wrong' before collapsing on their kitchen floor as daughter Izzy rushed in.
And then, in heartbreaking scenes right before credits rolled, Dante was seen being told in a hospital corridor that she'd died, with viewers both devastated and furious that the show would do that. Taking to Twitter, one complained: "They made a huge mistake killing off Chlo in the very first episode, still love the show but was hoping for more with Chlo and Donte," as a second reacted: "Killing chlo off is a travesty."
Amongst the many other angry reactions was a third which read: "@WaterlooRoad can't believe what you did in the first episode tonight killing off Chlo not happy and not watching anymore"
