Waterloo Road returns - but filming won't take place in Scotland

Waterloo Road is coming back on the BBC as a new series is set for production.

The hit TV drama aired from 2006 until 2015, set in a comprehensive school of the same name is returning - but no date has been confirmed as of yet.

The news was shared by the BBC on Thursday and the channel told that the series will be filmed in Manchester - instead of Scotland where the original series was filmed.

In 2011, the BBC announced they selected the Madeira Street building of Greenock Academy to film a new series of the TV drama.

The show continued to film in Greenock from seasons 8-10 before the show ended, however crews for the show also filmed in Port Glasgow and Gourock.

A tweet posted from the official Waterloo Road account read: "Psst. We've heard a rumour going around school" alongside a snap of a piece of paper.

"Brand new Waterloo Road coming soon!" was scrawled on the image.

Under the social media announcement, fans shared their joy at the show coming back.

Some typed: "Get innn" and "ahhh best news."

Others wanting more details about their favourite characters asked: "So are we seeing Donte Charles @adamthomas21 as a teacher or a dad?? & @chelseehealey Janeece Bryant as the receptionist??" and " @WaterlooRoad NEED Grantly back."

The old series of the show boasted an impressive cast who have gone on to star in big hits after like Jenna Louise Coleman, Phoebe Dynevor and many more.

Following the old episodes of Waterloo Road being released as a boxset on BBC iPlayer in September 2019 it has consistently been among the top five most-watched shows for young audiences on BBC iPlayer.

The BBC say the revival of the series will boost drama production skills in the north of England and help to reshape the BBC's drama slate to better reflect, represent and serve all parts of the country.

Piers Wenger, director of BBC Drama, said: "Waterloo Road is the perfect lens through which to explore post-Covid Britain, from the perspective of those who have arguably been affected most: young people in education.

"We are thrilled to be returning to this brilliant format - its thrills and spills, unmissable characters and high drama - at a time when audiences across Britain need it most - and to be collaborating with the brilliant Cameron Roach and Wall To Wall on its return.”

Cameron Roach, Executive Producer, added: "I’m really thrilled to be working with the BBC and Wall To Wall, in re-igniting the iconic brand of Waterloo Road.

"The vital and urgent stories that are playing out in schools across the UK provide incredible and emotionally powerful themes, that we’re excited to bring to a new generation of fans.

"Waterloo Road will continue its reputation for kickstarting, supporting and enabling careers both in front of and behind the camera, in a truly inclusive way, from our base in Greater Manchester."
