Waterford hurling legend Dan Shanahan has retired from club hurling at the age of 45.
The former Déise star made the news earlier this year when he embarked on his 30th season with his local club Lismore.
That proved to be the forwards final season in hurling, with his final game coming in a loss to Mount Sion in Lismore's Waterford senior hurling championship quarter final last month.
"I hung up the boots after the Mount Sion game," Shanahan told WLR's 'Lár Na Páirce' show.
"I was disappointed with the way it ended for me but that's sport. I've given 30 years to my club and I've no regrets."
"I played one junior year, one intermediate year and the rest was all senior. It was phenomenal. I loved going up to my club, I loved putting on the jersey, I gave it everything I had on the good days and on the bad days."
"I always say it to young lads in Lismore, the club is where you start and the club is where you finish. I've had a fantastic career. I loved putting on the jersey and I'll never forget where I came from."
Dan 'The Man' is a revered figure in Waterford and is held in high regard as one of the Déise's greatest ever players. Shanahan is also something of a cult figure for GAA fans around the country, and achieved legendary status as part of the great Waterford team that reached the All Ireland final in 2008.
Heartbreak was the order of the day for Shanahan in 2008, as Kilkenny brushed Waterford aside with minimum fuss. Shanahan retired from intercounty hurling after in 2010. In his 15 years of playing for Waterford, he won four Munster titles, a National league title was awarded an All Star on three occasions and was named hurler of the year in 2007.
Despite retiring from intercounty hurling 12 years ago, Shanahan continued to line out for his club with his final appearance coming 29 years after his first. In a glittering club career, Shanahan won a championship title as a 16-year-old in 1993, Lismore's third and most recent Championship win.
