Water safety warning as teen becomes tenth person to die during UK heatwave

  • A teenage boy's body was recovered from a pond in Swanscombe, Kent, marking the tenth open water death in the UK during the recent heatwave.
  • Emergency services were called to Galley Hill Road on Wednesday afternoon following reports of a swimmer in difficulty, with the death currently not being treated as suspicious.
  • Other recent open water fatalities include a 15-year-old in Lincoln, a 13-year-old in West Yorkshire, and a 12-year-old in Lancashire, among others across various regions.
  • The RNLI has issued warnings about the “very real risk” of swimming in open water, highlighting the danger of cold water shock despite high air temperatures.
  • The heatwave has also led to concerns about dehydration and heat exhaustion, with heat health alerts extended across much of England and water supply issues reported in Kent.
