Household bills could be lower for millions of customers after water companies failed to meet their performance target in several areas.
Ofwat, the water services regulation authority, has said a net total of £70 million will be handed back to customers through charge reductions in 2024 and 2025.
Thames Water is one of the companies which is set to be be giving its customers a reduced bill after they missed targets in relation to supply disruption, leaks and pollution.
It means customers of Thames Water will receive a reduction which will work out, on average, of around £4.92 for each customer.
However, the figure has been readjusted to £70 million by Ofwat from the original £114 million it had provisionally stated back in September.
The other companies that will be setting reduced bills are: Affinity Water, Anglian Water, Dwr Cymru, Hafren Dyfrdwy, Northumbrian Water, SES Water, South East Water, South West Water (South West area), South West Water (Bristol area), Southern Water, and Yorkshire Water.
Customers will not need to take any action. You should expect to be notified by your water supplier if you are eligible.
The total amount that the 12 companies have been asked to return is £193 million but the net total of £70 million applies as the larger figure is offset by five companies being permitted to charge more on their bills.
