NEW DELHI: Ukrainian fencer Olha Kharlan was disqualified for not shaking hands with her Russian opponent, Anna Smirnova, after their match at the Fencing World Championships in Milan, Italy on Thursday.
The decision to disqualify her was criticised by the Ukrainian presidency, with an aide, Mykhaylo Podolyak, denouncing it as "absolutely shameful" and a lack of empathy, considering the emotional context.
