Watch: Travellers flee as Venezuela airport ceiling crumbles after earthquake

Travellers ran for cover as an airport ceiling crumbled after a double earthquake struck Venezuela on Wednesday (24 June).

Eyewitness Wilmer Azuaje shared videos from Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía, just outside Caracas. Footage showed people running as debris fell around them.

Mr Azuaje, a former lawmaker says, “It’s shaking. Look at the disaster here, completely destroyed.”

Two earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck within 39 seconds of each other, causing widespread damage in the capital.

At least 164 people were killed and 900 injured after the powerful back-to-back earthquakes, interim president Delcy Rodriguez said. The US Geological Survey said there was a 44 per cent probability that fatalities could exceed 10,000.
