Watch: This play design on Kyren Williams’ TD catch was beautiful

Sean McVay remains one of the most brilliant offensive play callers in the NFL in his seventh season as a head coach. We were reminded of that on Sunday in the Rams-49ers game when he drew up a play that allowed Kyren Williams to walk – well, jump – into the end zone untouched.

On first-and-goal, the Rams ran a little delayed swing pass to Williams to the right side. Matthew Stafford held the ball for an extra second, allowing Steve Avila and Coleman Shelton to slip through the line and get upfield, securing two key blocks on 49ers defenders to open up a massive lane for Williams.

It was a beautiful play design and executed to perfection, giving the Rams their first touchdown reception by a running back since the 2021 season after having none last year.

The job Avila did on that play was excellent, slipping off his initial block to get to the second level and take out a defender for Williams. That’s why the Rams drafted him 36th overall this year.
