Watch: Kamala Harris relaunches KamalaHQ as Gen-Z-focused ‘Headquarters’ to counter far-right extremism

Former US Vice President and 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has unveiled a new media initiative, Headquarters, reviving and rebranding the popular KamalaHQ social media accounts more than a year after her election defeat to Donald Trump, calling it the “new Gen-Z led progressive content hub.”

Announced on Thursday, the project is a partnership with liberal advocacy group People For the American Way, founded by legendary television producer Norman Lear.

The initiative aims to “mobilise pro-justice, pro-fairness, pro-democracy young people against far-right extremism,” according to the organisation.

The rebranded platform will operate across X and TikTok, where the former KamalaHQ accounts boast a combined following of over 6 million, and will expand to YouTube, Substack and other digital platforms.

On X, the newly renamed handle @headquarters_67 cheekily notes in its bio, “Elon wouldn’t give us @headquarters,” while the TikTok handle is simply @headquarters.

From campaign war room to permanent digital base

In a launch video posted on X, Harris described Headquarters as a space to stay informed and engaged.

“It’s where you can go online to get the latest of what’s going on, and also to meet and revisit with some of our great and courageous leaders — elected leaders, community leaders, civic leaders, faith leaders, young leaders,” she said. “I’m really excited about it. Stay engaged, and I’ll see you out there.”

Harris will serve as chair emerita of Headquarters in an honorary capacity and will not have editorial control. Content and programming decisions will be handled by the Headquarters team and the leadership of People For the American Way.

Several members of the original KamalaHQ team are returning for the new venture. The project will be advised by Rob Flaherty, former deputy campaign manager for Harris’s 2024 campaign, along with Parker Butler and Lauren Kapp, who led KamalaHQ. Arlie Shugaar will join People For the American Way as director of platforms.

“Conservatives build permanent organising infrastructure. Progressives often dismantle theirs after Election Day,” said Svante Myrick, president of People For the American Way. “Headquarters is the end of that cycle.”

The relaunch also comes amid speculation about Harris’s future in public life, following her nationwide tour last year to promote her memoir, 107 Days, during which she hinted she was not done with public service.
