The incident occurred on July 9 when the fighter jet, belonging to the 116th Combat Wing, was forced to divert to the southern Greek island's commercial airport after taking off from Araxos Air Base in northwestern Peloponnese.
Upon touchdown, visible flames erupted beneath the fuselage, prompting an immediate response from airfield emergency services. Airport firefighters, already on high alert and positioned along the strip, intercepted the jet within seconds and successfully extinguished the flames before they could breach the fuel tanks or compromise the aircraft's primary structure.
