Duncan Ferguson might have bitten off more than he can chew by taking over Forest Green Rovers with six defeats in a miserable eight-game winless streak since being appointed boss of the League One club.
And the former Rangers and Everton striker certainly caused some amusement on the Gloucestershire club’s Twitter account after taking a bite out of a vegan croissant as part of a sponsorship deal with French bakers La Boulangère.
Ex-Scotland frontman Ferguson took over in January and the club have a meat-free policy imposed by eco owner Dale Vince. The 51-year-old, an uncompromising frontman during his playing days, suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Bristol Rovers on Saturday and would have been in no mood for laughing – but his tasting session had fans in hysterics.
Staring into the camera, he said: “Hi there, big Duncan Ferguson from Forest Green. Look what I’ve got. I’ve got some lovely vegan croissants called La Boulangère – I think that’s how how you pronounce it – and they are fantastic and if you keep on eating one of these a day you’ll look like me in the end.
“I’m just going to try one of these lovely croissants”… and as he takes his first bite he says, “that’s nice that.” Asked if he would have it with his breakfast he says: “I think I would. I think I’ll take them home with me and actually have them for my tea. La Boulangère is tasty, no matter how you say it – and believe me, it’s very difficult to say!”
Fans were in stitches and one wrote: “The gift that keeps on giving.” Another added: “Big Dunc loving the vegan life,” while one joked: “If you buy 12 of them then you’ve got more points than Forest Green Rovers.”
