The Indianapolis Colts defense took a major shot when safety Julian Blackmon suffered an Achilles tear midway through the 2021 regular season.
While the Colts tried to patchwork some spot starts at the safety position, Blackmon has been hard at work trying to get back as quickly as possible. The second-year safety posted some updates about his progress with the Achilles on his Instagram.
Blackmon had a strong rookie season that paved the way with some promise in Year 2. The Utah product was a serious playmaker for the Colts during his first six games.
According to Pro Football Focus, Blackmon allowed three receptions on five targets for 46 yards and a 90.4 passer rating. He also added three run stops to his total during those first six games.
The safety position is among the biggest needs for the Colts this offseason. Depth is needed behind their starters in a big way. How Blackmon will return from this injury is unclear—considering its history—but what is clear is the progress he’s making a few months following surgery.
