Watch: Celtic Park's spine-tingling atmosphere during Champions League anthem before Real Madrid loss

While ultimately Real Madrid ran out comfortable 3-0 winners, Celtic's return to the Champions League big-time provided plenty of positive moments for Hoops supporters.

Chief amongst them was the deafening reaction to hearing the competition's famous anthem ringing out around Parkhead.

The memorable moment was topped off by the sparkling lights display among the Celtic faithful as they dared to dream of pulling off a legendary win to rival their 2012 victory over Barcelona.

Ange Postecoglou's men certainly had their chances to take the lead in the opening 45 minutes as they took it to Los Blancos with the same high-octane football they utilise in the SPL.

Initially, Liel Abada was put through by Jota but his effort was straight at Thibaut Courtois.

And they went even closer on 20 minutes when Callum McGregor smacked the post from outside the box as the home crowd really started to believe that a heroic result might be on the cards.

Their chances were further boosted when Ballon d'Or winner in waiting Karim Benzema hobbled off injured.

However, as the first half drew to a close Carlo Ancelotti's classy side started to find their stride.

Firstly, Benzema's replacement Eden Hazard couldn't get enough purchase on a delightful cross.

That was then followed up by a fine save from Joe Hart who made himself big as Vinicius raced clean through on goal although admittedly he was coming off a tight angle towards the left flank.

The Brazilian was not long in being denied, however, as he finished off a superb team move on 56 minutes. Just four minutes later, they cut through Celtic again as Hazard produced a vintage dribble before feeding it over to Luka Modric who kept calm and waltzed inside til he had a shot on goal and duly scored with the outside of his right boot.

It was over as a contest from that point on with Real bossing possession and biding their time until Toni Kroos produced a quality ball to the far post which allowed Dani Carvajal to flick it across first-time to Hazard who easily prodded home a deserved goal.
