A thief in California nearly got away with almost $2,000 worth of clothing and shoes from Kohl's until his getaway driver got spooked and bolted, leaving him in the dust.

The Upland Police Department in San Bernardino County, California, uploaded a video to X showing the thief shopping for shoes and clothing inside a Kohl's. He then placed the items in a large black trash bag and bolted through an emergency exit door.

Police were dispatched to the theft in progress around 9:30 p.m. The video shows the thief running toward the getaway car's open back door and the driver fleeing the scene as soon as police arrived.

The suspect then dropped his bag and started running through the empty parking lot toward the getaway vehicle as it sped away. Police arrested the suspect after a short foot pursuit and "all $1,779.79 of the merchandise was recovered," according to the Department's post.

The thief, who's currently on parole for a felony firearm charge, was arrested and booked for grand theft, organized retail theft, and conspiracy. He was also put on parole hold for violating his parole.

The Department also shared that the getaway driver remains at large, "for now."
