Watch as hero local Edinburgh shopkeeper known as 'Rambo' fights off armed robber

The horrifying moment a masked criminal points a gun at an Edinburgh shopkeeper in a botched robbery attempt has been captured on CCTV.

In the shocking video, Khalid Mehmood, 65, known as locally as Rambo, can be seen opening his shop when a balaclava-clad David Mackenzie rushes in.

Moment before the incident, footage shows the scruffy thug drop his bike outside the store and take a gun out his pants as he strolls in.

The local robber, known as Crackers, is seen brandishing a gun which he points at the shop owner before demanding all his money.

Without a moment's thought, Rambo begins to defend himself leading to a fight between the pair before MacKenzie pushes his way to the other side of the counter.

At this point, the heroic shopkeeper manages to grab the gun off the thug and begins to bash him with it in self-defence.

Mackenzie flees the shop before getting out a knife outside the store and trying to stab him while waving a knife in the air.

Moments later Rambo manages to pull the balaclava off his face making the thief identifiable before the hapless criminal begins to apologise and claim the incident was a joke.

He then flees the scene and is later detained after police, including armed officers, enter a flat in Granton. During a search at the address, they recovered a gun and balaclava.

The failed robber, who is currently in Addiewell jail, in West Lothian, had denied assaulting Mr Mehmood and attempting to rob him of a sum of money on October 10 in 2021 at West Granton Superstore, in West Granton Road.

But he was found guilty on June 15 of the crime by a jury at the High Court in Edinburgh following a trial in which he did not give evidence in his own defence.

McKenzie was also convicted of possessing a knife and possessing a firearm with intent to cause the shopkeeper to believe unlawful violence would be used against him.

Lady Haldane deferred sentence on him until next month for the preparation of a background report.
