The Daily Mail's Martin Samuel says Newcastle are a long way away from competing with the likes of Manchester City. He wrote: "Eddie Howe has done a fine job since taking over from Steve Bruce but Newcastle have made hay against those in mid-table and lower, not the elite.
"Under Howe, they have now lost to City twice, Liverpool twice, Chelsea and Tottenham. This was emphatic, with two goals in stoppage time giving the result the punch it deserved.
"Those final goals are what will hurt Liverpool most. They started the day with a superior goal difference, but now trail City by four.
"Might it have been different? Certainly, had Wood taken a gilt-edged opportunity for Newcastle after six minutes. Allan Saint-Maximin struck a cross that picked out Wood poorly-marked but he headed straight at Ederson from close range.
"It was exactly the sort of miss Saint-Maximin spoke of when he bemoaned the conversion rate from his crosses. Wood is in that list of five with Sterling — but he is nowhere near the threat. In the second half Callum Wilson, free of injury at last, got through one-on-one but shot straight at Ederson."
Manchester City back on top after Sterling sparks rout of Newcastle
The Guardian's David Hytner says the Magpies were wasteful with their chances against Manchester City. He wrote: "Newcastle had started aggressively and they created the first big chance. When Allan Saint-Maximin crossed from the right, Chris Wood was all alone for the header. He directed it wastefully at Ederson.
"It was easy to wonder what would have happened had Wood scored, and City’s sights did look awry in the early running, Laporte and João Cancelo snatching at presentable opportunities following deliveries from De Bruyne.

"The breakthrough goal settled them and it was created by Ilkay Gündogan, whose clipped cross to the far post was made to measure for the run of Cancelo. Newcastle failed to track him and, when he headed square, Sterling nodded home.
"Newcastle flickered again in the 24th minute when Jamal Lascelles headed a corner goalwards and watched the ball hit Bruno Guimarães, who was offside. Wood rammed the loose ball past Ederson but the flag went up against Guimarães."

The Telegraph's Luke Edwards believes Newcastle must strengthen a number of positions this summer if they want to avoid being hammered by Manchester City again. He wrote: "Newcastle United were outclassed by Manchester City and look destined to finish in the bottom half of the table for the fifth successive year in the Premier League.
"It was another reminder - after an equally chastising defeat to Liverpool a week earlier - how far the Magpies are from challenging for domestic, let alone European, honours.
"The difference now, though, is that they have owners who have the ambition to improve and a manager in Eddie Howe who knows what they will need in the summer to progress next season.
"The precise size of their transfer budget will depend on how much they can raise through player sales, but the plan is to sign between four and six players.
"Newcastle’s main priority is to sign another centre-forward and it could be that they bring in two new attacking players.
"The team’s top goalscorer this season is Callum Wilson with six and he was on the bench for the first time in more than four months at the Etihad because of injury."
