Waste disposal restarts in Mussoorie: Officials say backlog being cleared, garbage being sent to Haryana for processing

MUSSOORIE: Garbage collection and disposal in Mussoorie has been in a bad shape for the last few weeks, leading to protests by residents. However, the situation has improved slightly in the last three days, since the local civic body has roped in a Haryana-based company for waste disposal.

Protests at the Sheeshambara trenching ground in Dehradun had prevented waste from Mussoorie, Harbartpur, Vikasnagar and Selaqui assemblies from being dumped at the waste management plant from August 1. This had led to severe waste accumulation at these places.

In Mussoorie, locals have been protesting against the issue, claiming that foul smell and toxic air were causing issues for the residents. Following this, the local civic body has now temporarily roped in a Haryana-based company to dispose of nearly 500 tonnes of accumulated garbage. However, locals allege that the actual number is around 900 tonnes.
