'Warrior princess' athlete killed in crash while riding her bike

Tributes have been paid to a cyclist who has been described as a warrior princess who put her "heart and soul into everything she did". Tragically, triathlete Lucy John, 35, was out on a bike ride when she was involved in a crash near Bridgend at the weekend.

People tried to help at the scene, but the 35-year-old died from her injuries after being involved in the collision at around 9.10am on Sunday, October 16, on the A48 near the roundabout at Laleston heading towards Stormy Down.

Lucy was a committed member of Pen-Y-Bont Triathlon Club, and was well-known in the local community. Members of the club said they have been left "heartbroken" by the news and have promised to support Lucy's husband Evan and their families.

A statement said: "As a club we are heartbroken to have lost such a committed, determined and caring individual. Lucy oozed positivity and was an inspiration to so many. Not just within our club but to the wider sporting community. As well as her friends, colleagues and family.

"She put her heart and soul into everything she did and seeing her achieve so much in her life is incredible. Lucy and her husband Evan have brought so much to our club and made some great friendships within it too. We will continue to support Evan and his family through this however we can.

"She was an outstanding athlete across the board. Starting her love for cycling with Tondu Wheelers and also being a part of the CrossFit Community with Crossfit Penybont who are all equally as heartbroken."

They added that Lucy was out doing something she "loved", and said the tragic incident has created a "great loss".

A member of the club added: "Those that were lucky enough to have known her, know she was super woman with one of our members describing her as a “warrior princess” and that’s how we as a club intend to remember her. She’s now the brightest star in the sky and we will always have her with us."

A just giving page has been set up to help support the family, and the details can be found here. Nearly £3,000 had been raised in just a few hours.

South Wales Police are continuing to investigate the collision., which involved a black Honda Civic.

Detective Constable Alun Efstathiou said: “I want to thank those members of the public who assisted at the scene and to the local community for their patience while the road was closed while we carried out our investigations. My thoughts are with the deceased’s family at this time.

“We would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have any dash-cam footage of the incident or who witnessed the manner of driving of the Honda prior to the collision.”
