Warrington Wolves have further strengthened their pack for 2023 with the capture of Australia forward Josh McGuire.
He will join on a two-year contract after completing this season with St George-Illawarra. Ex-Brisbane Broncos firebrand McGuire won the 2017 World Cup with the Kangaroos and has represented Queensland in State of Origin 14 times. He has also made more than 250 NRL appearances but said: “It’s always been in the back of my mind to come over and play in this part of the world.
“I’m a huge footy nut. I’ve been watching Super League for a long time and I’m a big fan of the English game. I think it can really suit me. I’m looking forward to getting over, wearing the primrose and blue and doing something special with this group. With the new additions, the pack that’s building there and the young guys coming through I’m very excited to be part of the squad for next year.”
Tenth-placed Warrington are doing it tough in Daryl Powell’s first season as head coach. But the ex-Castleford boss is making sweeping changes ahead of 2023. He has signed three props for next term - Canterbury’s Paul Vaughan plus Catalans duo Sam Kasiano and Gil Dudson. And they have already brought in another NRL front-row - Thomas Mikaele - after his release from Wests Tigers in May. McGuire can play prop, second-row or loose forward but is likely to operate at No13 for Wolves.
Powell said: “Josh is a tough, aggressive forward and I see a lot of strong leadership in his game. From my conversations with him he’s very passionate about coming over here for the right reasons. He’s had a fantastic career.
"He’s an Australian international who’s played at the highest level. We want a big, tough pack that can go out there and dominate every other pack in the competition which is what I believe we’ve put in place for next season with our recruitment.”
