After he stepped off a plane from Atlanta and walked through one of Washington’s busy airports Wednesday, passers-by reportedly cheered and applauded newly reelected U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock.
The rock star treatment continued at the Capitol, where Majority Leader Chuck Schumer greeted Warnock on the front steps to welcome him back. Inside the Senate chamber, colleagues gave Warnock hugs and slaps on the back as he participated in his first votes after earning a six-year term in office.
The Atlanta Democrat had told the hundreds of supporters who attended his election night party that he wouldn’t allow himself much time to savor his victory over Republican Herschel Walker. He needed to pivot back from candidate to sitting senator.
