Irish passport holders have a been advised to make sure a number of issues have been taken care of if they're planning on travelling on holiday to the USA this year.

Since Ireland is a Visa Waiver Program country, holiday makers must obtain approval through the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) prior to travelling to the United States. However, US Customs and Border Protection have advised that real-time approvals will no longer be available.

Arriving at the airport without a previously approved ESTA will likely result in being denied boarding, according to Aer Lingus. People must now apply no later than 72 hours before their departure date.

There’s a $21.00 USD charge per person to avail of this service which is collected by the US Department of Homeland Security. People can apply for authorisation using the ESTA website. Those currently not in possession of a visitor's visa who intend to stay in the States for 90 days or less for business or pleasure will only need a valid passport and to fill out some personal details such as an email address and emergency point of contact.

Another thing Irish tourists need to keep an eye on is their passport validity. Visitors must make sure their passport is valid up to their return travel date.
