A warning has been issued to people looking to travel on the M56 this weekend.
Drivers are being reminded the westbound M56 between Hale and Altrincham will be closed at times this weekend as National Highways works to finish its £85m upgrade. The upgrade will see an extra lane being added in each carriageway between junction 6 at Hale and junction 8 at Bowdon.
The plans also include "extensive" extra technology to help "smooth drivers’ journeys" through a section of the network carrying up to 100,000 vehicles a day, National Highways said. The westbound carriageway had been due to be closed for two periods this weekend including a daytime closure on Saturday.

However, the westbound carriageway will now be closed from junction 5 to junction 7 for three periods this weekend instead. The westbound carriageway will be closed from 9pm on Friday, September 2 to 7am on Saturday, September 3 and again from 9pm on Saturday, September 3 to 7am on Sunday, September 4.
The third closure on the westbound carriageway will be from 9pm on Sunday, September 4 to 6am on Monday, September 5. Access to the airport at junction 5 will be open at all times but a good motorway diversion away from the westbound M56 will be in place for other drivers heading beyond the airport to the M6 and North Wales.
The westbound carriageway closure this weekend is taking place ahead of a full eastbound carriageway and westbound carriageway closure of the M56 the following weekend – Friday, September 9 to Monday, September 12.
