Sefton Council has warned against scammers as energy prices are set to increase.
From October, 1 energy prices are set to rise across the country and the council is warning people to watch out for energy rebate scammers. According to a post on Sefton Councils Facebook page, scammers are looking to exploit this period of uncertainty with fake emails and texts claiming to offer discounts on energy bills.
Several fake scams have been circulating including one which entices people to apply for the £400 energy bill discount and the recipient is instructed to follow a link to a fake Ofgem website where they are then instructed to provide personal details in order to set up a direct debit for the funds.

A post on the Sefton Council Facebook page said: "As energy prices are set to increase from 1st of October, scammers have already begun exploiting this period of uncertainty with fake emails and texts claiming to offer discounts on energy bills.
"A number of scams have been circulating including the above which entices people to apply for the £400 energy bill discount where the recipient is instructed to follow a link to a fake Ofgem website and then to provide personal details in order to set up a direct debit for the funds.
"Action Fraud has stated that more than 1,500 reports have been made to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau relating to this."
