Warning issued to drivers travelling on 'one of the busiest roads in Sefton'

A warning issue has been for people travelling on a busy Merseyside road.

Sefton Council has told drivers travelling on the A565 in Thornton they could face delays for the next fortnight. A temporary traffic light system will be in place between Broom's Cross Road and Southport Road in Thornton from today, Monday, July 3 to Saturday, July 15.

The local authority said this is to allow for essential combined sewer and electrical works to take place as part of a nearby housing development. It added due to the extensive nature of the works the two-way temporary traffic light system will need to be operational 24 hours a day.

Sefton Council previously approved plans for 206 homes to be developed by Castle Green and Forth Homes in Thornton. The development received 400 objections at the time.

Residents said the development would add more traffic to what was already “one of the busiest roads in Sefton” – the A565 / Park View.

One man who lives on Park View told the previously told the ECHO: “This is one of the busiest roads in Sefton and the main commuter route connecting to both Formby and Southport, and the motorways via Broom's Cross Road.

“The increase to traffic on the A565, and the impact of an access road and traffic lights, are causing concerns about emergency response times which already exceed the targets set by the NHS.”

The development is allocated on a site between Holgate, Brooms Cross Road and Park View.

A Sefton Council spokesperson said: "We understand these works are likely to cause delay and potential disruption to journeys in the area and we are encouraging commuters to seek alternative routes during peak hours.

"During the hours of 7am-7pm the temporary traffic light system will be manned in order to keep traffic flowing as quickly as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."
