Warning after group of schoolchildren spotted skating on icy lake in Salford

Police have issued a warning to parents after a group of schoolchildren were spotted skating on a frozen lake in Salford.

Officers received reports that about 15 children had been seen playing on ice at Queensmere Dam, in Queensway, Swinton.

The incident happened just days after four boys, including two brothers and a cousin, died after falling through an icy lake in Solihull, West Midlands. All four children - aged six, eight, 10 and 11 - suffered cardiac arrests after falling into icy water.

In a post on the GMP Salford Facebook page this afternoon (Friday), officers warned parents about the dangers of their children playing around icy or cold water.

They said: "We would like to issue a polite reminder in order to keep the public safe. We have received reports that approximately 15 school children have been seen skating on the ice.

"This, after receiving such terrible news where 4 young children lost their lives after falling through ice in Solihull, Birmingham.

"We reach out to family’s to ensure that their children are spoken with to maintain their safety when they are without a responsible adult. Such behaviour could not only put their own lives in danger but also others should anyone look to help.

"We reiterate, do not go onto frozen bodies of water as you are risking your life."

Earlier today, Greater Manchester Police issued a warning after a person was spotted ice skating on a frozen pond in a park in Stockport. In a social media post this morning, officers said they had been 'made aware' of the incident in the grounds of Bramall Hall.
