Warner Bros. Games and NeatherRealm Studios finally announced their new Mortal Kombat game after months of teasing, and it’s not Mortal Kombat 12. The new fighting game is Mortal Kombat 1, a reboot of the series that takes place in an alternate Mortal Kombat universe, with fresh modes and new fighting systems, though what exactly “new fighting systems” means, NetherRealm didn’t say.
Mortal Kombat 1’s release date is Sep. 19, 2023, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and even Switch. Those who preorder the premium edition or the Kollector’s Edition will get access beginning Sep. 14, 2023. The game will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and somehow Switch.
The team published a debut trailer alongside the announcement, though bear in mind that, like with other modern Mortal Kombat games, the action and deaths are significantly more violent than your usual fighting game and most shooters.
These are the playable characters we know of so far:
- Liu Kang
- Scorpion
- Sub-Zero
- Raiden
- Kung Lao
- Kitana
- Mileena
- Shang Tsung
- Johnny Cage
NetherRealm said “many other” characters would be available, though Keanu Reeves definitely won’t be one of them. They stopped short of saying who most of the post-launch characters might be, but one is Shang Tsung. Shang Tsung is a pre-order-exclusive character, though if Mortal Kombat 1 is like previous games in the series, they’ll probably be available as DLC sometime after the game launches.
The base game will cost $69.99 on all platforms, while the premium edition will set you back $109.99. The Kollector’s Edition, which is only available for PS5 and Xbox, will cost $249.99. and comes with the game, early access, exclusive Johnny Cage and Liu Kang skins, early access to six post-launch characters, a Liu Kang sculpture, a steel case, three prints, and 2,700 Dragon Krystals – currency for the in-game shop.
