A number of Liverpool’s buildings and development projects are in the running to win prestigious honours.
The buildings have made the shortlist for the upcoming Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors awards (The RICS) which showcases the most inspirational initiatives and developments in land, real estate, construction and infrastructure - recognising outstanding achievement, teamwork and companies. Five buildings in Liverpool have made the North West regional shortlist.
These include India Buildings on Water Street, The Old Library in Tuebrook, Waterloo Warehouse at Waterloo Dock, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and the Tobacco Warehouse at Stanley Dock. entries are shortlisted across five categories – Commercial Development, Community Benefit, Heritage, Public Sector, and Refurbishment-Revitalisation.

India buildings are nominated in every category aside from Community Benefit. Recently the buildings underwent significant renovation and houses a new Government hub with 4,000 employees.
The Old Library in Tuebrook is up for awards in three categories and was also recently shortlisted for the RIBA North West Architecture Awards. The former Carnegie Library was rescued from a severe state of dilapidation and has since reopened as a childcare and community centre.
Waterloo Warehouse is nominated for the heritage award after the successful restoration of one of the warehouses overlooking East Waterloo Dock, one of the first docks built by celebrated engineer Jesse Hartley.
Liverpool’s new Clatterbridge Cancer Centre is nominated for the public sector award while the first phase of the Tobacco Warehouse redevelopment is up for the refurbishment - revitalisation award. The building, overlooking Stanley Dock and soon to be neighbouring the new Bramley Moore stadium, was once the largest brick based structure in the world. The west side of the building has since been converted into a range of apartments and homes.
All of the entries will be judged by an expert judging panel, with winners of the North West regional awards announced virtually in May. Chair of the RICS Awards judging panel, Peter Gilliland MRICS, said: “Despite much uncertainty and challenging conditions over the past couple of years, property professionals in the North West continue to deliver exemplary, and in many cases, world-class built projects that are having a profoundly positive impact on our cities and towns. I wish the teams behind them all the best of luck in gaining recognition for their skills and hard work.”
