War in Ukraine: Increased NATO presence in Romania is 'legitimate', FM says

THE INTERVIEW © FRANCE 24

In an interview with FRANCE 24, Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu reacted to the latest developments in the war in Ukraine. With more NATO troops and weaponry set to be deployed in Romania in the coming days, the top diplomat said that this move "cannot be seen as a provocation" but was instead a "legitimate response" by the Alliance to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Asked about the humanitarian situation at the border, Aurescu said that Romania was open to "all those in need".

Romania, which shares a border with Ukraine, is seeing thousands of people arrive there after fleeing the fighting in Ukraine. Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu said that more than 130,000 Ukrainians have entered Romania since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and at least 40,000 of them have stayed in the country.

"Romania is a safe country" and "open [...] to all those in need", he told FRANCE 24, stressing that this did not just include Ukrainian citizens.
