Wanted Co-op axe-wielding robber caught

A wanted man previously jailed for an axe robbery has been arrested.

Merseyside Police appealed for information after criminal Jamie Goffett breached his licence conditions.

The 33-year-old was previously jailed for an incident in which he pulled a small axe from his pocket, threatened staff, smashed the weapon against a till counter in the Co-op and demanded cash from staff. A store worker opened a till, put £100 into the bag and handed it to Goffett, who then fled the scene on foot.

The 33-year-old had shopped in the store just an hour before. The incident happened back in 2019 on January 24 at the Co-op on The Ridgeway in the Murdishaw area of Runcorn.

Goffett was jailed for five years after he pleaded guilty to the robbery and a charge of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. He claimed to have been under the influence of cocaine and alcohol at the time of the robbery.

Merseyside Police today, Wednesday May 24, confirmed Goffett, from West Derby, has been arrested after breaching his licence conditions following his release from prison after serving a sentence for robbery.
