Wang Huning, the Communist Party’s No. 4 official, was elected Friday to serve a five-year term as head of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country’s top political advisory body.
Wang, 67, was elected at the first session of the CPPCC’s 14th National Committee, replacing Wang Yang.
The new CPPCC leader joined the Politburo Standing Committee, the party’s top decision-making body, in October after the 20th national party congress. He’s also the first secretary of the party’s central secretariat.
Also at Friday’s meeting, more than 2,100 political advisors elected 23 vice chairs of the CPPCC National Committee, who included Vice Premier Hu Chunhua and Shi Taifeng, a Politburo member and head of the party’s United Front Work Department.
The CPPCC is a collection of advisors that gives party and government bodies suggestions on economic, political, cultural and social issues. It plays a role in promoting multiparty cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party.
