Wales rugby squad form guard of honour and applaud football team out of hotel

So often in this country we have seen Wales' rugby team on the receiving end of well wishes and applause as they head off to a World Cup.

Well, for the first time in 64 years, it's the football team's turn to be given the heroes' send-off to the biggest tournament in the world.

The wait is almost over. Today, Wales' football team fly out to Qatar as they embark on an epic World Cup adventure, with the full backing of three million people in this little corner of the world behind them.

For so long it has been Wales' rugby team flying the flag on the biggest stage, and doing a sterling job it must be said, but the footballers will now proudly take that mantle in the Middle East.

The players and the FAW met up at their Vale of Glamorgan HQ over the weekend and went through some light training on Monday before undertaking their press duties at the plush resort. At the same time, of course, the rugby team are there preparing for their next Autumn Nations Series clash with Georgia at the Principality Stadium this Saturday.

Rob Page's side today hold an open training session at Cardiff City Stadium as 2,000 school children cheer on their heroes for the final time before they travel to London and jet off on a seven-hour flight to Qatar.

However, before they left the Vale hotel, they were given a raucous send-off by Wales' rugby team in the foyer as the players formed a guard of honour, through which the football stars walked out of the hotel.

The adoration didn't stop there, either, with fans having arrived at the hotel to offer their hearty well wishes outside the door and into the car park.

And, judging by the scenes awaiting them at Cardiff City Stadium, the applause and cheers are about to ratchet up a decibel or two at Cardiff City Stadium.

The kids from local schools have been invited to watch their idols train before they board the plane to Qatar. And it's safe to say they were in full voice as they awaited the arrival for the team at Cardiff City's home ground as they belted out the Welsh rendition of Shakira's Waka Waka song from the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
