Wales playmaker set to leave the Dragons with French club leading the chase

Sam Davies is set to leave the Dragons at the end of the season, with French club Grenoble leading the chase for his signature.

The 29-year-old playmaker's contract at the Dragons is about to expire, and he is interesting a number of clubs in England and France as well as Cardiff.

Dai Young is interested in luring him to the Arms Park given Cardiff are losing outside-halves Jarrod Evans to Harlequins and Rhys Priestland to retirement.

Davies only has nine Wales caps to his name so would become ineligible to represent his country should he decide to leave the country given the current 25-cap ruling. Given he last represented Wales against Australia in 2017, the lure of the red shirt may not be as strong as it was when he turned down offers in England and France to join the Dragons upon leaving the Ospreys four years ago.

While nothing has been signed yet, WalesOnline understands ProD2 side Grenoble are the front runners for his signature. Grenoble are currently in the second tier of French rugby but are like a yo-yo club, regularly moving up and down between the Top 14 and the ProD2.

Should Davies decide to join Grenoble, he may well be plying his trade in the Top 14 next season with the club from south-eastern France currently lying in second place on the ProD2 table.

Wages in Wales are getting driven down next season, and with a salary cap of £4.5million set to be imposed for the 2024/25 season the four Welsh sides are finding it very difficult to retain players.

Despite Davies' departure, the Dragons will still be relatively strong at number 10 with Will Reed, JJ Hanrahan and Angus O'Brien on their books.

But a move to Grenoble isn't certain with other clubs in England and France also keen on Davies' services, while Cardiff are unlikely to throw in the towel.

Davies is a proven performer at club level, and the fact he likely won't have any international commitments would make him an attractive proposition for many clubs.
