Wales internationals in disbelief over pivotal moment in Scarlets v Glasgow match as officials booed off

Wales legends Scott Quinnell and Tom Shanklin were among those taken aback after the Scarlets were denied a crucial try in their Challenge cup semi-final.

The west Walians fell short in their bid to reach the final, with a decision by referee Mathieu Raynal not to award a penalty try in the second half undoubtedly playing a part in the comeback falling short.

With the Scarlets pushing for the Glasgow line deep into the second half and the scoreline reading 17-28, the home side threw the ball wide in an attempt to outflank the Scots' defence.

Johnny McNicholl's pass seemed destined for Steff Evans to get over for his second score of the day. However, Glasgow full-back Ollie Smith's outstretched arm deflected the pass intended for the Wales winger, with Smith then diving in an attempt to retrieve his knock-on.

Immediately, Scarlets players and fans were adamant that Smith had deliberately knocked the ball forward, which would have resulted in a penalty try and a card for Smith. But, after checking with the TMO, Raynal decided that Smith had made a genuine attempt to realistically intercept the pass - leaving plenty both at Parc y Scarlets and on social media stunned.

Former Wales No.8 legend Quinnell tweeted: "Penalty try and yellow card @scarlets_rugby"

Shanklin replied: "One of the clearest I’ve seen."

In the stadium, former referee Nigel Owens looked equally taken aback by the decision.

The officials were escorted off the Parc y Scarlets pitch to a smattering of boos, with BT Sport commentator Andrew Cotter referencing the send off they got in commentary.
