Wales captain Dan Biggar becomes major doubt for autumn Tests as Northampton issue fitness update

Dan Biggar has thrown a major scare the way of Wayne Pivac after Northampton issued a fitness update over the injured Wales captain.

The 32-year-old fly-half left the field with a knee problem in his club’s Gallagher Premiership clash against Wasps.

Northampton have since spoken with a specialist and plan a review ahead of Wales’ autumn series of Tests against New Zealand, Argentina, Georgia and Australia.

The club say in their statement: “Northampton can confirm that Dan Biggar sustained a knee injury during Sunday’s win over Wasps.

“The 32-year-old fly-half was withdrawn in the 42nd minute and the club’s medical staff have since consulted a specialist regarding the injury."

They say "Biggar will continue to be assessed" by their own medical department "over the coming weeks and his condition reviewed by a specialist ahead of the autumn internationals.”

The bulletin will cast doubt over Biggar's involvement in the November Tests.

He has proven extraordinarily durable over the years, frequently confounding expectations after picking up bumps, but Northampton are evidently anxious over this latest knock.

There will be worries the 106-cap player has sustained a significant injury.

He once again reminded all of his worth in South Africa in the summer, when he led by example as Wales won a Test against the Springboks in the republic for the first time. Biggar’s display in the opening game of the three-match series was widely seen as inspirational.

The uncertainty over his captain will add to head coach Pivac’s problems.

He is already without the injured Liam Williams, Leon Brown and Owen Lane, while there are major concerns over Johnny Williams and Josh Navidi, with Alex Cuthbert, Justin Tipuric, Gareth Anscombe. Promising youngster Dafydd Jenkins, who has a shoulder problem, is also currently sidelined.
