Wales boss Rob Page has questioned Giovanni van Bronckhorst ’s decision to thrust Aaron Ramsey straight into the spot-kick cauldron of Seville.
The Rangers fall guy was left on the sidelines for the opening 117 minutes of the Europa League Final before being sent for the penalty shoot-out.
Ramsey missed as the plan backfired in the same way as Gareth Southgate’s did in the Euro 2020 Final against Italy.
The Three Lions gaffer sent Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho on in the final minute of extra time purely to take kicks, only for the pair to miss.
When asked if there were lessons, Page, who feels it adds unnecessary pressure, said: “Absolutely. Everybody is different.
"Personally I wouldn’t bring a goalkeeper on in the last minute because he is better. I think it’s disrespectful to the other keeper.
“I wouldn’t do that. They have earned the right to play the game, so what happens if there is a penalty in the 90 minutes?”
On outfield players, Page continued: “It’s difficult because you have to be up to the pace of the game.
“We see it time after time when you are not up to the pace of the game. It happened recently where the players’ first touch after he comes on is missing a penalty.
“It’s unnecessary pressure for the player. I wouldn’t make the substitution. If it was forced and you have to take a penalty, then you have to get on with it.
"But I wouldn’t like to play god with regards to that.”
Page spoke as he named Ramsey in his squad for the World Cup play-off against Scotland or Ukraine.
He added: “I nearly messaged him, but then I thought I would give him some space.
“I can’t wait to get him in the building and back with his mates. I will have a one-on-one with him.
“Aaron will be fine. Big players step up for big occasions. Wednesday didn’t go his way.”
