Wales announce Cardiff City Stadium match to raise money for Ukraine with Scotland still among possible opponents

Wales have announced a friendly match at Cardiff City Stadium on March 29, with Scotland still among the possible opponents.

Wales take on Austria at the ground in a huge World Cup play-off semi-final next Thursday and hope to book a place in the final against either Scotland or Ukraine in the race to reach Qatar.

The final, due to take place the following Tuesday, has been put on hold until June because of the the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. That left Wales with a free slot to fill. They have announced a match that will enable them to raise funds for the people of Ukraine.

The opponents are not yet known. But it Wales win on Thursday, they will play the losing team from another World Cup play-off semi-final between the Czech Republic and Sweden. If they lose to the Austrians, Wales will meet Scotland anyway in the fund-raising game. Whoever the opposition, profits will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Tickets will go on sale on Friday, with the FAW saying: "Fans will be able to add an optional donation to the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal when purchasing their ticket."

The FAW also say the Welsh team "will be making a donation to the appeal and the DEC will also run a bucket collection at Cardiff City Stadium. Any profit made by the FAW from the staging of the match will also be donated.

"18 million people are projected to become affected by the conflict with four million people expected to be displaced, leaving behind their jobs, belongings and loved ones. Donations made prior to and at the Cymru international match will help to provide food, water, shelter and protection."
