Waitrose begins rationing sunflower oil due to war in Ukraine

Waitrose has begun to ration the amount of sunflower oil it sells to each customer due to the war in Ukraine. The majority of sunflower oil sold in the UK is imported from Ukraine and the war has disrupted supplies.

The supermarket has put up signs telling customers that they can only purchase two bottles of the cooking oil per visit, according to The Telegraph. The disruption has been caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which supplies 80% of Britain's sunflower oil.

According to The Telegraph, a Waitrose spokesperson said: "We want to ensure customers continue to have a choice of cooking oil so we are asking them to buy no more than two units each."

The company is also limiting the amount of oil that can be bought online on its website. If customers try to buy more than two bottles they are greeted with a message that reads: "This item has not been added. To help more customers get the goods they need you can only order two from the sunflower oil category."

Ukraine supplies around 80% of the sunflower oil sold in Britain. A large proportion of the remainder comes from Russia. Posters have also been put up at some Sainsbury's supermarkets stating that the supermarket is suffering from supply issues for its sunflower oil.
