WA's record rearguard action has given them some hope in the one-day cricket final against NSW.
After winning the toss and slumping to 6-89, WA reached 9-225 on Friday at Melbourne's Junction Oval.
Matthew Kelly and Jason Behrendorff put on 52, a WA record for the 10th wicket in one dayers.
Kelly made 27 not out and Behrendorff hit two sixes off Hayden Kerr in the last over of the innings for his unbeaten 24.
Daniel Sams caught Behrendorff at deep mid-wicket on the last ball of the innings, but stepped over the boundary rope.
While WA's score is well short of par on a wicket that does not appear to be playing too many tricks, early wickets would make the run chase interesting.
That was what Sams did to WA, snaring their openers in his first two overs to leave them in early trouble at 2-15.
Star batsman Shaun Marsh then gave WA an injury scare at 2-70 when he turned back quickly after attempting a quick single.
Marsh had a sharp pain in his left leg and dropped to the ground in pain.
He needed medical attention for several minutes before resuming his innings.
But two runs later, Adam Zampa bowled him for 29, ending his 61-run stand with Cameron Bancroft.
Zampa then bowled captain Ashton Turner with his next delivery for a duck and Hilton Cartwright survived the hat-trick ball.
When fellow legspinner Tanveer Sangha trapped Bancroft lbw for 39, WA were on the brink at 6-89.
Jhye Richardson's top score of 44 led the late-innings fightback and Matthew Gilkes dropped a sitter off Kelly when he had only made two.
Gilkes then caught Richardson in the deep to give Sams his third wicket and it was given out, despite the fielder appearing to touch the boundary rope with his foot.
Sams snared 3-45 from 10 overs and Zampa took 3-40.
NSW beat WA in last year's final.
