W. R. Berkley Stock: Is Wall Street Bullish or Bearish?

With a market cap of $26 billion, W. R. Berkley Corporation (WRB) is a leading insurance holding company and one of the largest commercial lines insurers in the United States, with operations spanning global markets. The company operates through two core property and casualty segments: Insurance and Reinsurance & Monoline Excess, providing a broad range of insurance solutions to its customers.

Shares of the Greenwich, Connecticut-based company have lagged behind the broader market over the past 52 weeks. WRB stock has fallen marginally over this time frame, while the broader S&P 500 Index ($SPX) has returned 20.4%. Moreover, shares of the company are up 1.5% on a YTD basis, compared to SPX’s 12.7% gain.

Focusing more closely, shares of W. R. Berkley have underperformed the State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF’s (XLF) 10.6% rise over the past 52 weeks and 6.2% YTD return.

Despite Q2 2026 operating income rising to $1.27 per share and beating the consensus on Jul. 20, W. R. Berkley shares fell marginally the next day as revenue of $3.72 billion came in below the estimate. The revenue shortfall was primarily due to a $55.13 million loss on investments and net premiums earned of $3.19 billion also narrowly missed the consensus.

Investor sentiment was further weighed by weaker Reinsurance & Monoline Excess premiums of $361.36 million and a wider Corporate & Eliminations pretax loss of $148.88 million, despite net investment income rising to $418.71 million.

For the fiscal year ending in December 2026, analysts expect W. R. Berkley’s EPS to grow 11.8% year-over-year to $4.84. The company’s earnings surprise history is mixed. It beat the consensus estimates in three of the last four quarters while missing on another occasion.

Among the 20 analysts covering the stock, the consensus rating is a “Hold.” That’s based on two “Strong Buy” ratings, 11 “Holds,” one “Moderate Sell,” and six “Strong Sells.”

On Jul. 27, UBS raised its price target for W. R. Berkley to $77 while maintaining a Neutral rating.

As of writing, the stock is trading above the mean price target of $70.33. The Street-high price target of $83 suggests a 17.6% potential upside.
