Vladimir Putin's forces are losing more than 1,000 troops a day and trying to fight using decrepit equipment nearly a year after Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine.
Western sources estimate that Russian losses now stand at between 175,000 and 200,000 - with poorly-trained troops sent straight into battle to replace the killed and wounded.
As a result, an expected offensive has been dismissed as a "whimper".
