Vivianne Miedema set to pen Arsenal contract extension amid Barcelona interest

Arsenal are closing in on a new contract for Vivianne Miedema as they look to ward off interest from Champions League holders Barcelona.

Miedema’s current Gunners deal is due to expire this summer and she has been mulling over her options for the future.

Arsenal are now confident they will be able to convince the Dutch forward to sign a new one-year contract, which would make her one of the best-paid players in the Women’s Super League (WSL).

Barcelona, who will attempt to win the Champions League for the second year in a row when they face Lyon in the final later this month, have been tracking Miedema closely.

But the 25-year-old has seemingly been won over by the work manager Jonas Eidevall has done during his first year at Arsenal, which saw them pipped to the WSL title by Chelsea by one point on the final day.

Arsenal are continuing to invest in the women’s game and that includes major building work taking place at the training ground this summer. The club are completely renovating the women’s football hub to make it bigger and better for players.

Plans include players having more dedicated facilities and space in which to train, hold meetings and undergo rehabilitation. The renovations have already begun and it is hoped they will be completed in time for the start of the new season.

Arsenal are also planning to play more women’s games at Emirates Stadium next season after the success of matches there over the past year, with over 13,000 tickets sold for last week’s north London derby against Tottenham.
