Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema is due to see a knee specialist and undergo scans after suffering a bad injury in the Women’s Champions League.

Miedema injured her left knee while stretching for a ball during Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat by Lyon on Thursday night and she was stretchered off the pitch in tears.

The 26-year-old will now visit a knee specialist and have scans to learn the full extent of the injury, with fears it could be serious.

Miedema’s injury came on the stroke of half-time against Lyon and dampened the mood after the Gunners qualified for the quarter-finals with a game to spare.

Arsenal are top of Group C and will stay there if their result in Zurich next week matches Lyon’s against Juventus.

Losing Miedema would be a hammer blow to Arsenal, who have struggled with injuries all season. England captain Leah Williamson has only just returned from a spell on the sidelines, while club skipper Kim Little and summer signing Lina Hurtig have also had fitness troubles.
