Visitors confused as hundreds of umbrellas appear in Nottinghamshire town centre

Residents in a Nottinghamshire town have been left scratching their heads after umbrellas started appearing in the marketplace. From Tuesday, May 9, changes have been taking place in Newark and over the past week more and more umbrellas have been appearing in the town centre.

There are now around 600 umbrellas above the town, which are part of a project by Newark Creates, a high street heritage action organisation in its third year. The project was officially launched in partnership with the ADHD Neurodiversity Foundation on Wednesday, May 17 and will remain up until September.

Sara Bullimore, cultural programme coordinator for Newark Creates, said: “It’s been a wonderful launch event we have had such a positive day with performances from young people and we are looking forward to presenting the rest of the programme." Newark Creates is working with five local schools for the project, which also has an artistic and education programme running for the rest of the year.
