Visakhapatnam: Insurance firm fined Rs 40,000 for not settling death claim

VISAKHAPATNAM: Coming to the aid of a man who had been running from pillar to post seeking settlement of death claim of his wife who died of snakebite, the district consumer disputes redressal commission-I, Visakhapatnam, directed SBI General Insurance to pay 10 lakh as claim amount and 40,000 as compensation.

Karri Tata Rao, a resident of Venkatapuram village in Visakhapatnam district (currently Anakapalle district), moved against the insurance company after it failed to settle the claim.

Tata Rao said his wife Karri Satyavathi had availed a personal accident claim policy from the insurance company for a sum of 10 lakh. She died on April 26, 2017. The Insurance company repudiated the claim in October 2018 stating that the exact cause of the death was not established. The commission observed deficiency of service on the part of the insurance company which failed to prove that the death of the woman was not due to snakebite.
